For the 2025 Aspen Art Fair, Vielmetter Los Angeles showcases a three-person presentation of works by Math Bass, Sadie Benning, and Bari Ziperstein. Known for their respective distinct practices, these artists work across painting and sculpture through unique vocabularies of abstraction and symbology that reject objective interpretations, historic models, and embrace process and a fluidity of meaning.
Math Bass’s paintings are marked by repeated iconographies of bold graphic shapes: flowers, thought bubbles, bones, crocodiles, and staircases populate swaths of raw canvas and flat color fields. These tessellating symbols form an alphabet of emotions and mutable meanings as Bass maneuvers them in varying thinly layered gradients and opacities. Signs and symbols seem to metamorphose or suggest other shapes, resulting in poetic geometric compositions that reflect a body as much as a picture.
Transforming notions of the binary are thematically central to Sadie Benning’s paintings, bending expectations of the medium. Made of aqua resin, casein, and acrylic gouache, these abstract color arrangements are part painting, part sculpture, part drawing, and rendered across a range of scale. Although labor-intensive and tactile, their bold compositions suggest a place of play and pleasure amidst ambiguity and material hybridity. In sequence, the paintings recall 8-bit animation, computer glitches, and cartoons, suggesting a storyboard for a new and uncharted narrative that reflects an ever-evolving reality.
Bari Ziperstein’s ceramic sculptures are elaborately hand-built works inspired by historic art and design movements such as the turn-of-the-century Wiener Werkstätte group. Intricately embellished with ornate patterns, Ziperstein samples the patterns and shapes of objects and textiles found in these archival materials. Through her ceramics she creates her own and unique visual language thus bending the rules of the medium’s history. These new vessels were created during her recent residency at the Anderson Ranch using their unique soda firing kilns resulting in highly textured earthenware with rich surface materiality that can only be accomplished through the skillful manipulation of the ceramics in these special kilns.
