On February 5, 2000, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects opens a new exhibition space on 5363 Wilshire Boulevard and will inaugurate the gallery with a solo exhibition by Stefanie Schneider.

Stefanie Schneider’s photography takes place in California, a place that is thoroughly saturated with Hollywood’s myths.  The artist, who has been living in Los Angeles for several years, shows her photographs in narrative sequences that fuse personal history with spontaneously invented realities.

Working with damaged instant film stock, from which she develops large C-prints, Schneider introduces friends, relatives, and often herself into her fragmentary tales.  The minimal gestures and unobtrusive body movements of her recurring characters effortlessly mutate the California landscape into backdrops for these ephemeral “movies”.  Schneider’s characters are trapped in a place between collective memory and lived experience, moving slowly between dream and drama.
