Vielmetter Los Angeles congratulates Paul Mpagi Sepuya on the opening of his solo exhibition, Paul Mpagi Sepuya. Focus. Desire at the Sprengel Museum Hannover in Hannover, Germany on view from July 1st through October 4th, 2026.
This presentation of works will be the Sepuya’s first major solo museum exhibition in Germany. The exhibition offers a comprehensive insight into a body of work that fundamentally questions and expands the photographic portrait. Featuring more than 90 works spanning roughly two decades, the exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the development of Sepuya’s artistic practice.
Sepuya is one of the defining figures in contemporary photography and his works navigate the boundaries between portraiture, staging, and reflection on the photographic medium. From a Black and queer perspective, he examines the conditions of photographic visibility and the relationship between the photographer, the subject, and the viewer.
Developed in collaboration with the Fotomuseum Winterthur, the exhibition brings together early and recent bodies of work as well as materials from the artist’s personal archive.
