Evan Trine’s work sits somewhere between painting and photography. In the artist’s view, photography and painting are not opposing mediums – the printer and the paintbrush are both expressive and manipulable, and as tools, are equally relevant to the formation of the works.

One of the main components of Trine’s process includes removing and rearranging the ink cartridges in a large format printer, where Trine prints a photo onto linen over and over, with different arrangements of ink, to create alternate versions of a particular image – each version being wholly and inherently unique, irreproducible. Then he cuts apart sections of the linen and sew them back together to create a patchwork of the original. Lastly, Trine layers different segments of paint over portions of the image to complete the composition.

The gridded format and linear path of paint mimics the precision of the printer, while the tactility and texture provide a humanity that is typically not associated with the printed image.
