Vielmetter Los Angeles is excited to announce our two-person presentation of works by Samuel Levi Jones and Patrick Wilson for the 2026 iteration of Expo Chicago.
Both artists approach abstraction from their own distinct perspectives, resulting in a cross-disciplinary dialogue that explores various modes and methodologies of constructing an image.
Samuel Levi Jones deconstructs and reconstitutes found legal, medical, and historical texts into layered compositions that grapple with questions of authority, representation, and recorded history. The resulting works consist of disassembled book covers sewn together and interspersed with pulped paper, producing surfaces that digest and transform their source material into grid-like fields of color and texture. Jones’s practice centers on physically undoing volumes of information, probing the existing power structures and struggles of exclusion and equality, and finally, reimagining their material components into painterly abstractions.
Patrick Wilson creates hard-edge paintings that reflect seductive improvisations on radiant color and meticulous structure. In lineage with John McLaughlin, Fred Hammersley, and Karl Benjamin, he incorporates a fascination with the history of California hard-edge painting, light and space, and fetish finish into intensely colorful paintings of varying planes and opacities through fastidiously applied layers of acrylic paint. Over the past twenty years, Wilson’s works have continued to evolve with complexity and finesse through a consistently immaculate process of creating super-flat surfaces that seem at once both solid and transparent.
