Vielmetter Los Angeles is pleased to present Whitney Bedford’s Veduta (Vuillard Jardins Publics Spring), 2025, an immersive multi-panel painting inspired by Edouard Vuillard’s Jardins Publics.

This most recent and ambitious large-scale painting—comprised of nine separate panels—continues her Veduta series, which she began in 2020. Over the past five years, the series has yielded a range of haunting evocations of the natural world, wherein Bedford reinterprets historical landscape paintings with vibrant hues that contrast a staged frame superimposed with equally dazzling flora.

In Veduta (Vuillard Jardins Publics Spring), 2025 the artist reinterprets Vuillard’s 1894 painting Jardins Publics, depicting people enjoying nature in a bucolic city park. Bedford’s painting both mimics and accentuates Vuillard’s original, which wrapped around the private dining room it was commissioned for. Bedford’s work can similarly be installed in site-specific interpretations, pairing the panels in varying arrangements.

Bedford’s lushly patterned and multi-dimensional surfaces aggrandize Vuillard’s scenes of leisure through the artist’s placement of pink, purple, and red weeping willows in the composition’s foreground.

This dynamic pairing suggests both a mourning for a bygone era of bucolic plentitude and a critical examination of what seems now to be a romanticized view of the natural world. It is a tableau of tranquility and hope, timelessly supernatural yet presciently infused with environmental concern.
