Vielmetter Los Angeles congratulates Wangechi Mutu on the opening of her solo exhibition Intertwined at The New Orleans Museum of Art. It is on view until July 14, 2024.
Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined traces connections between recent developments in the artist’s sculptural practice and her decades-long exploration of the legacies of colonialism, globalization, and African and diasporic cultural traditions. At once culturally specific and transnational in scope, Mutu’s work grapples with contemporary realities, while suggesting a radically changed future informed by feminism, Afrofuturism, and interspecies symbiosis.
Originating at the New Museum in New York in 2023, the exhibition features over one hundred sculptures, paintings, collages, drawings, and films from across Mutu’s twenty-five-year career. Mutu first gained acclaim in the 1990s for her collage-based practice exploring mutation and transformation. She recently has extended this practice to develop hybrid, fantastical forms that fuse mythical and folkloric narratives with layered socio-historical references.
The exhibition is curated by Vivian Crockett, Curator, New Museum, and Margot Norton, Chief Curator, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, with Ian Wallace, Curatorial Assistant, New Museum.
