Press Release

In his second solo exhibition at the gallery Robert Olsen shows a series of small oil paintings depicting common urban fixtures like bus shelters, curbs, and trash-cans. Olsen’s paintings condense the objects to their basic prototypical and impersonal properties – they become blank projection surfaces for the rich impact of color and light.

“I am not concerned with elevating the objects depicted. I do not intend for them to gain status through paint or to fool the eye through rendering. I work towards reducing images to core referents through the specialization of color and form edge clarity. For me, the ease of discernment is important. I am seeking an exact image of these ubiquitous territories.” Robert Olsen, January 2002

Robert Olsen received his BFA degree from the California College of Arts and Craft; he currently completes his MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The gallery is located at 5363 Wilshire Boulevard, two blocks west of La Brea Avenue, between Detroit and Cloverdale. Gallery Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 12 – 6 pm and by appointment. For visuals, please contact the gallery at vielmetter@earthlink.net
