Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade are artists based in New York. With longtime collaborator Jade Gordon, they form the collective My Barbarian, which has shown performances, videos, and installations in museums, galleries, theaters, festivals, music venues and public spaces since 2000 (including MoMA, Studio Museum in Harlem, New Museum, Hammer Museum, LACMA, MOCA, and internationally). Their work has been included in the Whitney Biennial, Montreal Biennial, three Performa Biennials, and the Baltic Triennial. Gaines and Segade collaborate on other performance projects, including most recently “Star Choir” at New York’s Park Avenue Armory and “Blood Fountain” on The Highline with the group ARM. Gaines is the author of the book Black Performance on the Outskirts of the Left (2017), and Segade is currently finishing a graphic novel, The Context. Gaines is associate professor of Performance Studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and Segade is distinguished lecturer of Art at Hunter College, CUNY.
