Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is pleased to present new work by Jane Callister. Callister uses a variety of methods to apply paint to canvas, paper, and adhesive sign film which she then incorporates into the canvas and/or directly applies to the gallery walls. In her paintings, she manipulates spills, splashes, brushstrokes and puddles of liquid acrylic paint into spatial terrains that suggest lunar landscapes and extra-terrestrial vistas. On closer inspection these charged liquid landscapes dissolve back into amorphous abstractions: dripping and exploding in every direction simultaneously; defying both their constructed logic and gravity.
Jane Callister received her MFA from the University of Las Vegas and she is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Art at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She will be included in the upcoming “California Biennial” at the Orange County Museum of Art and her work has been shown recently in the Prague Biennale, at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, in “Step Into Liquid”, Ben Maltz Gallery, Otis College of Design, in “Wall Painting”, UTSA Art Gallery at the University of Texas at San Antonio, in “Re-imagining landscape”, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and in “Extreme Abstraction”, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY. Her work has also been featured in Vitamin P: New Perspectives in Painting, Phaidon press, 2002; in Abstract Painting: Concepts and Techniques, Watson Guptil, NY 2005; and in LA Artland, Blackdog Press, London, UK, 2006. This is Jane Callister’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
