Press Release

Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is pleased to present a work by Mathilde ter Heijne in the project room.

A central aspect of Mathilde ter Heijne’s work is her exploration of violence and its manifestation both in political structures and personal relationships. In her work, she has repeatedly investigated the phenomena of victimization, self- sacrifice and self-immolation, processes which condition our collective memory and our existence as political and private human beings.

Shown in the exhibition is a 5 minute DVD, entitled “Suicide Bomb”, in which the artist engages in a suicide mission. The operation was filmed with the help of a special effects film team and results in the explosion of a puppet that resembles the features of the artist. The film features only those scenes that would have been cut if this was a special effects sequence for an action film or commercial, so the viewer is well aware of the ficticious character of the film. The accompanying text is constructed from excerpts of various semi-scientific publications and lectures relating to terrorism and reflects politically different opinions.

Mathilde ter Heijne graduated from the Stadsacademie Maastricht and the Rijksacademie Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Migros Museum fuer Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, and at the Arndt & Partner Gallery, Berlin. Her work has been included, among others, in “The Ten Commandments” at the Deutsche Hygiene Museum, Dresden, in “MARS – Kunst und Krieg” at the Neue Galerie Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, in “Turbulence” at the Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Arnhem and in exhibitions at the Kunstverein Hamburg, the Kunstverein Hannover, the Witte de With, Rotterdam, the Museum Abteiberg, Moenchengladbach, the Bonnenfantenmuseum, Maastricht, the Stedelijk van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven, and the Stedeleijk Museum, Amsterdam. Mathilde ter Heijne is represented by Arndt & Partner in Berlin. This is her first solo exhibition at the gallery.
