Susanne Vielmetter Berlin Projects is pleased to present new works by Sean Duffy.  At the center of Duffy’s work is a fascination with the phenomenon of repetition, the cyclical reoccurrence of movements in popular culture as well as in art, and such connected strategies as recycling and sampling.  From these explorations Duffy has questioned the relationships between the original and the copy, between the authentic and the knock-off, and the sense of detachment that happens each time something is repeated or recycled. Duffy’s interest in repetition has manifested in a series of fused turntables which repeat a single record track with several tone-arms, thus creating intensely layered compositions that are familiar and strange, old and new at the same time. 

In this exhibition, Sean Duffy closes the cycle of repetition by referencing back to his own work and thus inserting himself into the recycling process.  Undermining the relationship between producer and consumer of pop culture, Duffy is offering an entire collection of his own personal worn T-shirts sewn into pillows and cushions.  These pillows are shown inside two Bucky Balls made of plywood and rope.  The balls are sagging versions of Buckminster Fuller’s traditionally rigid form and act as containers as well as chairs for lounging.  They invite the viewer to trace the artist’s personal history by flipping through record albums that fuse known album covers with images of Duffy’s past works, some of them successfully exhibited and lauded by the press, others in various stages of incompleteness or outright embarrassment. 

Across from the lounge chairs, two videos of a turntable placed side by side on two monitors become a representation of Duffy’s earlier double turntables.  Each video depicts one half of a single turntable on which Duffy plays covers of favorite songs, including Roberta Flack singing “Bridge over Troubled Water”, The Housemartin’s “People Get Ready” and Brasil 66’s version of “With a Little Help From My Friends.”  By showing the video on two monitors playing the same song with a few seconds time interval, the impression of a turntable with two tone-arms arises.  The resulting remove creates a sense of detachment that may be typical for our generation: the songs sound familiar, but they are not the original ones, the turntable looks recognizable but we watch it on TV, the T-shirts ring a bell but only tell us as much about the artist as any other kind of product branding would do.  It’s a detachment that might be idiosyncratic for a generation that admits complicity into their own complacency, a generation that buys and listens rather than takes action and responsibility.

Sean Duffy received his MFA from the University of California at Irvine.  His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Luckman Gallery, California State University Los Angeles; at the Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS, and his work has been included in the "California Biennial", Orange County Museum of Art; in "kurzdavordanach", Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne, Germany; in "Black Belt" at the Studio Museum, Harlem, and Santa Monica Museum of Art; in "Realm of the Senses", James Cohan Gallery, New York, NY; at the Sean Kelly Gallery, New York; at the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, the Irvine Fine Arts Center, at LACE, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, and at the Nevada Institute for Contemporary Arts, Las Vegas.  His work will be included in “SightRhythms: Sound and Light in Contemporary Art” at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. His work is included in the collections of the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University, TX; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, San Diego, CA.

Susanne Vielmetter Berlin Projects is located at Holzmarktstrasse 15/18 in Berlin Mitte.  From the U/S train stop Jannowitzbrücke turn right and walk approximately 300 meters towards the “Aral” gas station.  At the “Aral” gas station turn right towards the galleries which are located in the arched spaces underneath the rail road tracks.  Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 11 am – 6 pm.

Wir freuen uns, neue Arbeiten des amerikanischen Künstlers Sean Duffy in unserem Ausstellungsraum in der Holzmarktstraße in Berlin Mitte zu präsentieren. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit von Sean Duffy steht die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen der Wiederholung, der zyklischen Wiederkehr von Bewegungen in der Popkultur und in der Kunst und den damit verbundenen Strategien von “sampling” und “recycling”. Ausgehend von diesem Interesse stellt Duffy das Verhältnis zwischen Original und Kopie, zwischen Authentizität und Plagiat in Frage und untersucht die spezifischen Formen der Entfremdung, die im Prozess der Wiederholung oder Wiederverwertung automatisch vorkommen. Duffys Interesse an der Wiederholung hat sich in der Vergangenheit vor allem in einer Serie von manipulierten Plattenspielern ausgedrückt, die eine Schallplatte mit mehreren Tonarmen gleichzeitig abspielen und so verdichtete Kompositionen erzeugen, die gleichermaßen vertraut und befremdlich wirken.

In der aktuellen Ausstellung schließt Duffy den Zyklus der Wiederholung, indem er auf seine eigene Arbeit verweist und sich selbst in den Wiederverwertungsprozess eingliedert. Indem er seine komplette Sammlung alter, getragener T-Shirts zu Kissen vernäht und in der Ausstellung anbietet, untergräbt er das Verhältnis zwischen Produzent und Konsument der Popkultur. Die T-Shirt-Kissen polstern zwei “Bucky Balls”, schlaffe, zusammengebastelte Konstruktionen aus Sperrholz, die formal an architektonische Modelle von Buckminster Fuller angelehnt sind. Diese Konstruktionen dienen als bequeme Sessel, die den Betrachter dazu einladen, sich anhand einer Sammlung von imitierten Plattencovern über die persönliche Vergangenheit des Künstlers zu informieren. Die Plattencover illustrieren Duffys Künstler-Vergangenheit, wobei manche seine erfolgreichen Arbeiten, kommentiert von lobenden Zeitungskritiken zeigen, während andere die erfolglosen künstlerischen Versuche in unbeschönigter Peinlichkeit darstellen.

“Double Television”, eine Arbeit, die auf zwei nebeneinandergestellten Monitoren zwei Videos zeigt, verweist auf Duffys frühere “double turntables”. Jedes der beiden Videos zeigt einen halbierten Plattenspieler, auf dem Duffy die Coverversionen seiner Lieblingssongs abspielt, unter anderem Roberta Flacks Version von “Bridge over Troubled Water”, The Housemartin’s “People Get Ready” und die Version des Beatles Songs “With a Little Help From My Friends” von Brasil 66. Da die beiden Videos jeweils eine Hälfte des Plattenspielers zeigen, wird der Eindruck erweckt, es handele sich um ein und dasselbe Gerät mit zwei Tonarmen, die zeitlich versetzt den selben Song abspielen. Die daraus resultierende Verschiebung bewirkt eine Verfremdung, die man vielleicht als emblematisch für unsere Generation sehen kann: die Songs klingen vertraut, aber es sind nicht die Originalkompositionen, der Plattenspieler wirkt realistisch, ist es aber nicht, und die T-Shirts sagen nur soviel über die persönliche Geschichte des Künstlers aus wie es eine Produktbeschreibung tun würde. Diese Geste der Verfremdung deutet auf die Eigenheiten einer Generation hin, die lieber kauft und zuhört statt aktiv ins Handlungsgeschehen unserer Zeit einzugreifen und Verantwortung zu übernehmen.
